Networking two or more computers has a number of advantages.
Internet Connectivity
For the home user, perhaps the biggest advantage is being able to share a high- speed Internet connection between two of more computers. No more waiting until one person is finished before the next can get online. But the home user can also benefit from the same features that a business would enjoy.
Printer Sharing
IF you have one printer that is better quality than the others, now each computer can print to that printer. No more coping a file to a floppy disk or flash drive and taking it to another computer to print. (A practice sometimes known as "Sneeker Net".) At the same time everyone can use the "draft" printer for documents that don't need the full high quality look.
OR, perhaps you can take the money spent for several low to medium cost printers attached to each computer and get that laser printer you've been thinking about.
File Sharing
Files on one computer can now be accessed/shared by another computer user.
We know that not all people should have access to all files, so there are methods of securely configuring your system to determine who has access to what files AND what they can do once they access them. Users can only access the files that are authorized by you. Even then you can limit their ability to edit or delete a file by restricting their access permissions.
Lastly, there are two methods of connecting a LAN: Wired (most secure and preferred by most businesses) and Wireless (least secure "out of the box" but can be made reasonably secure.)
